Prisoners were driven to suicide by beatings in Luhansk remand

Two inmates tried to commit suicide in protest of the permanent beatings in Luhansk isolation ward on October 27. One of them died on the next day. One of the relatives of the convict has reported about it to Informator.lg.ua. The information about violation of the human rights, practicing by the administration of the remand according to detenus, is regular come to the edition office of Informator.lg.ua.

The one more fact, ended with the tragedy, has happened on October 27, 2015.

This day the administration of the jail entered armed people in camouflage and masks on the territory of the prison. According to the words of the relative of one of the prisoners, likely they were representatives of one of the “force units” of so-called “LPR”, who entertain in a such way or training their “working skill”. “Top brassers” has been beating tough the convicts for a few hours.

“This people in masks lined up on both sides of the corridor and made all prisoners to pass through this line, brutally beating them, told our interlocutress, such actions happen not a first time. Prisoners are beaten permanently, they are denied of rights and got used to systematic indignities”.

This time, on October 27, unable to withstand, two prisoners has ripped their stomachs in protest. One of them 23-year Eugeniy Tikhankin died on the next day from injuries. Mother of Eugeniy, Alla, tried to communicate with the journalists, working in a “young republic” to give publicity to this fact, but she got refusal from everywhere. Alla accents, that she has found a lot of injuries on the body of her son, which possibly could be the circumstances of brutal beating. The information about death of one of the detenu in the isolation ward was confirmed by lawyer of “Kharkov human rights group” Andrew Didenko, who keeps in touch by the telephone with prisoners of a big number of penitentiaries, left on the occupied territory.

“Unfortunately, happened is not something new, human rights are violated with the most blatant barbaric way on the occupied territory in jails and prisons. Wherein there is nobody to protect them, it’s impossible to work there for the human rights organizations, there is no law and responsibility. People in jails on the occupied territory in fact, are deprived of rights, they are exposed by systematic humiliation and beatings. Unfortunately, we, human rights defenders, can’t do anything, we even have no opportunity to meet with them. It feels like insurgents are ignoring human rights and any of norms of international law at all”, concluded Andrew Didenko.

Alla, the mother of dead young man, told us about her attempts to seek justice. The head of the prison answered to her direct questions “Who killed my son?” that he doesn’t know, because he wasn’t present at this moment. The relatives of the prisoners, being in Luhansk isolation ward, told us that such systematic beating of people in this “institution”, controlled by authorities of “LPR” is the usual thing. Wherein, the batterers themselves don’t have a concrete aim, they only entertain, hiding their faces with masks. A number people, who are in Luhansk remand, had got there long time before the military conflict and really they must be already released. So, died Eugeniy has been being in the jail for two years, waiting for the decision of the court. The fact is, that Ukrainian courts don’t work in the “republic”. That’s why a number of convicts are in limbo in the prisons on the occupied territories. It’s not clear what they must hope for. Those, who were arrested by Ukrainian power are become the hostages of the current situation. They are in jails for a big number of months and “authority” doesn’t hurry up to release them. Driven to despair relatives of the prisoners of Luhansk isolation ward were going to gather near the “house of the government of LPR” (ex-regional administration) on November 2 and to demand from representatives of the so-called “power” to take under control happened situation and to punish guilty.

Let’s hope that this brave decision won’t bring them in the place where their relatives are for now.
