Most Ukrainians are ready for a compromise for peace in Donbass

70% of the respondents are ready for a compromises for peace on the East of Ukraine. 18% advocate peace at any cost, and as much support the forceful liberation of the east of Ukraine. Sociological research ‘Public opinion on the uncontrolled Donbass: what has changed?’, which was carried out by The Ilk Kucheriv Foundation for Democratic Initiatives and the Razumkov Center sociological service, is told about it.

It’s noted that readiness for compromises depends from the remoting from hostility. So, the readiness for compromises is demonstrated by every fourth respondent on the East and only every tenth shows the same on the West.

According to data of poll, the most effective among the suggested solutions for peace in Donbass the population considers the international pressure on Russia to make it refuse to intervene into Donbass conflict (38%) and successful restore of normal life in controlled territory of Donbass (28%).

Comparing with last year, NGCA financing issues (from 20% to 11%), Federal system of Ukraine (from 7.5% to 5%) and Russian as the second state (from 11% to 5%) have lost its relevance.

NSDC issue on trade blockade of ‘DPR’ and ‘LPR’ was supported by 47% of respondents, against – 37%.

It’s noted that the most high blockade support is on the West (66%), the most low – on the South (30%).

55% respondents are for the offer to recognize legislatively occupied NGCA of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, 22% is against.

‘The most high level of support of consolidation of the fact of occupation is on the West (64%) and in the center (59%). 49% of respondents support the legislative consolidation of the fact of occupation, and the less number of supporters is on the South – 35%’, the text in the press-release told.

55% of Ukrainians see the political future of self-proclaimed ‘DPR’ and ‘LPR’ as a part of Ukraine on pre-war conditions. Nearly 9% of respondents have supported the independent existence of these formations or as a part of Russia.

As it was noted in the press-release, comparing with last year the support of an offer to provide more rights to NGCA has decreased. The East mostly supports the granting autonomous rights to non-control territories (28%). The biggest part of country citizens (47%) prefers to left these territories as a part of Ukraine in the pre-war status.

More than 60% of respondents support an idea of introduction of the international peacekeeping contingent in Donbass. The fifth part of the population is against peacekeepers. The number of supporters and opponents is approximately equal on the South (38% – against, 36% – for).

The research was held from June 9 to 13, 2017. 2018 respondents in the age from 18 in all regions of Ukraine, except Crimea and NGCA of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, were asked.  The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%.
